About This Role:

The Technology Development Institute (TDI) at Kansas State University (KSU) provides engineering and business solutions to industry clients and supports university research in the development of technology-based products and processes that have commercialization potential. TDI is a unit of KSU’s Carl R. Ice College of Engineering (COE) and employs both full-time technical staff as well as part-time student interns.

TDI seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to design, build, and test products and machines for a variety of commercial industries. The primary responsibilities will be mechanical design engineering and project management. 

The successful individual for this position will be capable of operating in a team environment, leading technical projects and developing prototypes and custom equipment. This position will collaborate with other staff/team members and work closely with clients ranging from industrial companies to university researchers.

This is a renewable 12-month full time, benefits eligible, unclassified position and will execute mechanical design engineering projects as assigned. The availability to occasionally work outside of normal business hours including weekends as necessary to successfully execute design projects is required. Occasional overnight travel required.

This position requires a highly motivated, results-driven self-starter who enjoys learning new industries and applications, and who possesses a high level mechanical aptitude, self-confidence, excellent communication and problem solving skills. Additionally the position requires the ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative team environment and must be hands-on during the prototype build and testing phases of work.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design Engineering:

  • Specific activities include project planning, developing product specifications, creating and selecting design concepts, detailing designs, conducting engineering analyses and supporting prototyping and equipment builds. Applicants should have the ability to work in a 3D CAD package (Solid Works preferred), provide engineering expertise to clients, and refine designs for prototyping and testing. Experience in electro-mechanical systems preferred.  The position may also support upstream and downstream development activities, including market research, feasibility studies, sourcing, manufacturing, marketing and sales, product launch, and technical documentation.

Project Management:

  • Participate in the business development activities of new client projects, including prospect development, client communications, and developing a scope of work, schedule, and budget for project execution based on client input and project requirements. Prepare documentation and present design(s) to client for review and acceptance (i.e. design reviews). Document and proactively communicate project status/issues with client frequently throughout the duration of the project. Document work throughout project and at project completion.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field 
  • One to three years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or Agricultural Engineering with an emphasis in machine design and/or engineering related certifications
  • Extensive experience in product and/or machine design, mechanical testing and prototyping
  • Experience in electro-mechanical design and automation considered a plus
  • Three to five years of design engineering experience in multi-disciplined project-based environments
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in solid modeling

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

$ 65,000 - $ 75,000 annual salary
