About this Role:

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Veterinary Nurse position in Small Animal Surgery. This position exists to assist with providing quality veterinary procedures for client/teaching/research animals in the VHC. This is a position primarily assigned to provide assistance with Small Animal Surgery on a daily basis, whether it is to enhance help for a busy surgery schedule, to assist with teaching, or to help with a research project. Assignment will be made by the supervisor.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Small Animal Surgery Ward 3 Nurse Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for organization and maintenance of the small animal surgery Ward 3 areas and bandage room. The position will provide nurse support to small animal surgery faculty, staff, and training of senior veterinary students assigned to the small animal surgery rotation.

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • Organize and stock the surgery ward and bandage room with necessary materials and equipment to facilitate efficiency in patient receiving, testing & treatments
  • Assist faculty in training veterinary students in basic aspects of patient care, including venipuncture, drug administration, sample submission, physical therapy and patient hygiene
  • Assure daily data entry in medical records and accurate billing entry into the hospital information system
  • Monitor on a daily basis; pre- & post-treatment patient care, including vital signs & patient status, feeding schedules, cage and run areas, and animal appearance

Small Animal Surgery OR Nurse Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain the surgical suites to consistently provide a sterile environment and adequate supplies
  • Assist as a surgical team member by preparing animals for surgical procedures in a timely manner
  • Assist surgical team members by acting as circulator during procedures, and maintaining and monitoring sterile technique in surgery areas
  • Become familiar with new medical equipment as it becomes available
  • Assist to maintain the SAS log on a daily basis

Additional Responsibilities:

  • As necessary, assist with after hours emergency procedures and participate with rotational weekend and holiday stand-by
  • Be an effective and dependable employee by beginning each day with a clean, neat uniform, establish and maintain good work habits, maintain a positive professional relationship with faculty, staff, students, and clients
  • Will cross-train to other areas within Surgical Support Services to provide support in time of illness, vacations, or staff deficiency
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or Hospital Director by following procedures developed for the KSU-VHC.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be registered as a paraprofessional under the authority of the Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within six months of employment.

    For a Veterinary Nurse I:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

    For a Veterinary Nurse II:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and two years of relevant experience.

    For a Veterinary Nurse III:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain and use ordinary veterinary medical hospital equipment
  • Be physically able to handle, restrain and provide medical services to domestic animals
  • Knowledge of standard emergency veterinary medical procedures
  • Ability to perform word processing and data entry procedures on a personal computer
  • Be willing to master new techniques

Salary Range / Pay Rate:

$ 12.22 - $ 22.66 per hour
