About This Role:

The Kansas State University Department of Plant Pathology is seeking a motivated, independent, and organized Research Associate to assist with all aspects of field and lab management in the programs of Dr. Erick De Wolf and Dr. Kelsey Andersen Onofre. The successful candidate will have experience in greenhouse assay development, design, and implementation of field trials, pathogen culture maintenance, and plant disease diagnostics with molecular diagnostic approaches. Ability to travel to research locations in Kansas as needed to survey for plant pathogens and collect research observations from field-based experiments.

Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Conducting lab, field, and controlled environment studies.
  • Independent experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
  • Refining and improving research protocols, as needed.
  • Maintaining living organisms (plant and fungi) used in experiments. This includes culture collections and inoculum production as needed.
  • Participating in wheat diagnostic activities. Candidate should be comfortable with morphological and molecular diagnostic techniques.
  • Lab organization and purchasing (requiring close coordination with other lab members)
  • Assisting graduate and undergraduate students in the lab group as they progress in their research
  • Projects will often require independent travel to research locations within the state.
  • There will be opportunities for writing and drafting manuscripts and reports.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and two years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the field of plant pathology, plant protection, agronomy, or related field of science.
  • Experience designing controlled environment and field studies
  • Experience with plant disease diagnostics, both morphological and molecular
  • Experience working collaboratively in dynamic research teams
  • Experience with statistical software such as R or SAS
  • Previous experience with wheat or other small grain crops.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • The candidate should have a valid driver's license.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

Anticipated salary is $50,000 - $80,530. The actual salary will be determined on the candidate’s experience, education, internal equity, and departmental funding.
