About this Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) is seeking applicants for a Laboratory Technician.  This position will perform diagnostic testing in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory.  This includes:

  • Operating analyzers, reporting results, and maintaining instrumentation used for diagnostic testing.
  • Administrative duties, such as accessioning tests, reviewing test results, and assisting clients via email, phone, and fax, are also required.


Rabies vaccination is required for all personnel handling fresh mammalian tissue.

All work shall be performed in accordance with KSVDL standard operating procedures, American Association of Animal Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians standards, and safety guidelines at the CVM, Kansas State University, state and federal levels. Participation in quality assurance, proficiency testing, and safety training is required.

The incumbent will handle with strict confidentiality all mail, files, correspondence, reports, legal documents and information regarding sensitive personnel and organizational issues. The incumbent will work cooperatively within the organization to improve customer service and promote team spirit; foster teamwork among co-workers and colleagues; keep other staff informed or progress on issues; actively participate in and fully support cross training of assigned personnel in essential skills to assure continuity of operations; and participate as a productive team member in support of the KSVDL mission and goals.  This position will require basic computer skills including databases, spreadsheets, word processing and data entry.  As well as, excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Perform quality control testing and monitor results to maintain laboratory equipment in working condition. Monitor test results for transcription errors. Troubleshoot, repair, and perform calibrations and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Perform diagnostic testing within established turn-around times.
  • Receives requests and processes laboratory samples according to laboratory protocol, assists clients via phone, email and fax.
  • All other duties as assigned which include but are not limited to: research testing, and general housekeeping

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree with MLT certification (or equivalent)
  • Two years experience in a laboratory with automated and some manual procedures
  • Completion of at least 6 months in a training program in Clinical Lab Science approved by the ASCP, AMT, and AMA, ASCP or AMT certification (or equivalent) as a registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist OR Registered Veterinary Technician with either diagnostic laboratory experience or minimum 2 years professional experience

$ 15.48 - $ 26.32 per hour
