About This Role:

The Staff Assistant serves as a Mentor for the summer Upward Bound Program at K-State Polytechnic (UB-Polytechnic), Department of Educational and Personal Development. The Upward Bound Summer Program is June 7-July 16, 2021. The Mentor will receive mentoring responsibilities from an office staff, which includes the Director, Academic Services Coordinator, and Office Specialist. This is a temporary role, located in Salina, Kansas.

Upward Bound is a campus-based TRIO program designed to assist area high school students with additional academic preparation, advisement, and encouragement to succeed in high school and later in college.

The Upward Bound Program participants are involved in the program from the time they are selected for participation until they graduate from high school. The program offers a six-week summer program, which consists of residential and non-residential components and Saturday sessions during the academic year. Students must meet family income guidelines and/or be first-generation college-bound.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completed at least 2 college academic years by June 1 (junior, senior, graduate student, or relevant experience) with at least a GPA of 3.0 and no academic problems, probations, or expulsions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising youth
  • Demonstrated experience leading small groups and tutoring
  • Demonstrated experience showing effective leadership skills, lead by example, mentoring, and being a role model for high school students
  • Demonstrated experience showing strong interpersonal skills

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

Due to the uncertainties of COVID-19, the Upward Bound program will provide one of the following options for the summer program: virtual, hybrid, or in-person summer program based on the K-State guidelines and recommendations.  Therefore, Staff Assistant/Mentor must be flexible to work any of the options: virtually, hybrid, or in-person.

  • Must attend the 3-day training on June 2-4, 2021
  • Virtual:
    • Monitor student attendance and participation in online classes during six week online summer program
    • Facilitate virtual campus visits for Upward Bound students
    • Assist Instructors and Academic Services Coordinator with duties as assigned


  • Hybrid:
    • Monitor students attendance and participation online or in classroom setting at target schools (Clay Center Community, Ell-Saline Jr./Sr., Lincoln High School, or Newton High School) and/or community and set up Zoom for online instruction
    • Travel to target schools (Clay Center Community, Ell-Saline Jr./Sr., Lincoln High School, or Newton High School)  to meet with students in small groups and set up Zoom for online instruction.
    • Facilitate virtual campus visits for Upward Bound students (in-person if permitted)
    • Assist Instructors and Academic Services Coordinator with duties as assigned


  • In-Person;
    • Must live in the residence hall during the summer program (June 2-July 2, 2021). 
    • Must assist with community service college visits and cultural trips July 5-16, 2021. 
    • May not participate in classes or other employment during the UB summer program dates.
    • Must be able to work early and late hours, and participate in physical activities
    • Must attend CPR and First-aide training, provided as on the job training, if program is in person
    • Must be able to drive various vehicles (suv’s, minivan, etc.)
    • Must provide 24/7 supervision for attending students
  • Valid Driver's License upon employment

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:
