About This Role:

The purpose of the Research Technologist is to provide operational support for research in a biosafety level 3 Ag facility including work with livestock infected with pathogenic agents. This individual will assist the supervisory Animal Suite Manager with broad support and coordination of activities associated with infectious disease research and food safety and food security studies.

Responsibilities include waste management, decontamination, adherence to animal welfare regulations, assisting research teams in project planning and operational logistics, and training research staff on procedures, protocols, and equipment operation. Duties include report generation, database inputs, and user interface, work with large animals (livestock) and small lab animals (rodents and rabbits) in BSL-3 and BSL-3Ag research projects, assisting with coordinating animal space use assisting with technical procedures involving animals as required for research projects, decontaminating spaces and equipment with specialized technologies, and removal and decontamination of waste via alkaline hydrolysis tissue digestion equipment and autoclave sterilization. The position also supports necessary coordination for unique biocontainment areas used in food safety and security studies.

Position requires variable on-call, evening/night, weekend, and/or holiday swing shifts as required to provide 7 days/week, 365 days/year animal care coverage.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires an associate degree. (This position may use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager.)
  • Two or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AALAS certification at the Asst. Lab Animal Technician (ALAT), Lab Animal Technician (LAT), or Lab Animal Technologist (LATg) level
  • Some college/vo-tech level biology, animal science, or veterinary technician training/education
  • Experience working directly with animals at a veterinary clinic/hospital, animal shelter, and/or animal boarding kennel facility
  • Animal husbandry experience with laboratory animals (rodents & rabbits), small animals (dogs/cats), and/or large animals (agricultural livestock) in a research facility
  • Experience working in an AAALAC accredited research institution/facility
  • Experience working at ABSL-2, ABSL-3, and/or ABSL-3Ag in a research facility
  • Experience working with animals used on infectious disease research projects in a research facility
  • Experience in maintaining detailed records
  • Experience working in a biocontainment facility at biosafety level 3 biosafety level 3Ag. AALAS
  • certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based software, including word processing and spreadsheets
  • One or more years of research animal care experience involving infectious disease research projects using both large (livestock) and small lab animals
  • Experience in the application of biological safety principles and practices as applicable to infectious disease research involving animals
  • Physical requirements include carrying equipment and instrumentation (up to 50 lbs), walking (up to 2 miles/day), climbing (areas not easily accessible), standing (up to several hours), and moving heavy objects (25-100lbs)
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment under extreme conditions of heat or cold
  • Protective equipment includes negative pressure respiratory protection, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), suits, gloves, and boots
  • This job has the potential for safety hazard exposure and infectious disease exposure. Protective vaccines will be offered as needed

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Position requires the employee to be American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certified at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or above; if not LAT certified at time of hire the employee must become LAT eligible within 12 months and certified within 14 months of being hired.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a KSU pre-employment background check.
  • A National Select Agent security risk assessment and/or U.S. Government security clearance is also required for the employee to work at the BRI.
  • Attend and remain current on institutional and regulatory required training.
