About This Role:

The Olathe Horticulture Center is searching for a Research Technician to assist in conducting research projects in the area of vegetable production. Research project implementation involves designing and implementing high tunnel, open-field, and greenhouse experiments. This position will oversee the day-to-day management of all the research projects that are being conducted. They will work with and train students and staff on farming practices and ensure that research activities are successful. Activities in the area of vegetable production include production planning, seeding, transplanting, and grafting for transplant production in the greenhouse. Field and high tunnel activities include implementing and maintaining high tunnel and field experiments such as irrigation, fertigation, pest management, harvesting and data collection.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a high school diploma
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Biology, or closely related field
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Biology, or a closely-related field
- Experience in conducting horticulture field research
- Commercial Pesticide Applicator license preferred
- Ability to operate common field equipment such as a tractor, roto-tiller, mower, and spray equipment
- Ability to provide formal and informal training to students, staff, and others
- At least two years horticulture experience
- Proficiency with common computer programs for word and data processing
- Ability to manage seasonal staff and coordinate multiple research projects
- Strong commitment to expanding and fostering diversity
- Ability to work outside in hot and/or cold weather
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain in agricultural fields
- Able to lift at least 50lbs
- Able to operate basic agricultural equipment including mowers, two-wheel tractors, trimmers, tractors, loaders, and irrigation pumps
