About This Role:

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. The personnel in this position will conduct tests in the rabies laboratory including the performance of rabies antibody analyses on human and animal sera including serum neutralization and ELISA assays, the interpretation and reporting of serological and diagnostic results, and maintaining the quality system through documentation, review, and trend analysis for all tests as well as corrective action reports and ensuring the quality of test results. The person in this position will also assist with program operations including monitoring quality control data, accuracy of test result entry, SOP precision and necessary updates, monitoring supplies usage and timely ordering.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Rabies Serological Assays: Includes sample preparation, serum dilutions, virus growth and dilution, cell staining, and microscopic reading of slides with calculation of results. Data entry of test submissions, test results, and quality control tracking and report generation.
  • Quality System: Perform quality assessment and quality control documentation needed for the Rabies Lab to stay in compliance with regulations, assist in SOP updates, and Corrective Actions.
  • Customer Service: Assisting in customers via phone, email, and fax. Provide assistance with clients concerning test submission, result interpretation, rabies vaccination protocols, and how that relates to the testing the laboratory does. Provide assistance with clients concering rabies diagnostic issues.
  • Project Management: Review Special Project requests and associated Study Memos and contracts to ensure compliance, direct resources for completion, and review final records for accuracy and completeness. Manage, document, and direct activities for internal reagent preparation, use, and storage. Manage internal and external proficiency programs.
  • All other duties as assigned which include but are not limited to: performing ELISA assays, maintaining cell lines, representing the lab at technical meetings and general housekeeping.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Med Tech, CLS, or chemical, physical or biological science

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Other science degrees need to have: 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience in cell biology, clinical laboratory test procedures and quality review
  • Knowledge and/or experience with project management including computer programs and construction/use of formulas in excel
  • Highly proficient computer skills including databases, spreadsheets, word processing and data entry
  • The applicant must have excellent written and oral, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and one year experience in project management
