About This Role:

Kansas State University Libraries seeks two creative and dynamic professionals to serve as Library User Services Specialists. The Specialists strive to provide all library users with excellent customer service while effectively connecting library users to information, developing services for a changing and diverse population, and advocating for all library users’ needs. A core component of the position is to provide access and reference services to library patrons who visit Hale Library’s Help Desk or who contact the Libraries’ help services via phone, chat, or e-mail. The Specialists are members of the Hale Library Help’s supervisory team, working closely with the Library Help Student Supervisor and supporting the student specialists in their training and day-to-day work.  

Each Specialist will have one additional role: 

  • Resource Link Coordinator: responsible for the operations of the Resource Link @ Hale Library in the Dave and Ellie Everitt Learning Commons to provide student-centered services on campus. 

  • Reserves Coordinator: responsible for the management of our Course Reserves collection, working with professors and with our Collection Development and Acquisitions staff.  

These full-time, non-tenure track positions report to the Head of the Library User Services Department. To be successful in this position, the Specialists must work well both independently and in a collaborative environment that relies on effective communication, both with library users and library staff. In addition, the incumbents must possess excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships across the Libraries in an environment where flexibility and collaboration are essential.   

 Core Position Duties: 

  • Provide excellent customer support in all circulation and reference interactions, including accurately and effectively communicating library policies and procedures. 

  • Assist with training and mentoring of the Hale Library Help Student employees and help administer policies established by their supervisor. 

  • Develop and maintain expertise in resources and library users’ needs. 

  • Develop and/or deliver content to help patrons discover, navigate, and/or utilize information resources. 

  • Participate in assessment to support continuous improvement of library users’ experience. 

  • Participate in exploring new service models or technologies to improve the library user experience. 

  • Participate in orientation and outreach activities with university and community groups 

  • Serve on one or more of K-State Libraries’ cross-departmental committees or task forces. 

  • Seek opportunities for professional development. 

  • May be required to work some evening and weekend hours. 

As Resource Link coordinator 

  • Assist with promoting the Resource Link @ Hale Library to potential partners throughout campus. 

  • Maintain the calendars for the consultation rooms and tables that make up the Resource Link @ Hale Library. 

  • Establish and maintain regular communication with the Resource Link @ Hale Library’s partners.  

  • Assist with assessing the use of the Resource Link @ Hale Library and using the results of the assessments to advocate for changes that will lead to increased benefits for K-State’s students. 

As Reserves Coordinator 

  • Add instructor’s personally-owned items and Textbook Affordability Program additions and library-owned items to Course Reserves as they are received. This entails adding bands, changing location codes, shelving items and e-mailing instructors to alert them of the availability of the items for checkout. For personally-owned items, it also entails creating brief records in Alma, our integrated library system.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully supervise student employees and support their development of skills within the role.  

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a record of success working with or providing services for diverse groups. 

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues or team members. 

  • Experience indicating a strong willingness to contribute to a collegial working environment. 

  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new systems. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science or its equivalent. 
  • Demonstrated experience providing user-centered services such as in-person reference, IM reference, reserves, or circulation. 
 Other Requirements:
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

Anticipated salary:

$38,000-$42,000
