About This Role:

The Institute for Environmental Research (IER) at Kansas State University is seeking to hire a full-time Research Assistant for the Testing Services Program.  The primary focus of the Testing Services Program is on evaluating the thermal performance of textiles.  Specifically, the responsibilities of this position include:

  • Receiving, unpackaging, and labeling test samples
  • Conducting thermal manikin tests on sleeping bag systems, clothing systems, bedding systems, and personal cooling systems.  Sleeping bag tests involve dressing a 40lb. supine manikin in a bag system, and may require pushing, pulling, and partially lifting the manikin for up to 4 test changes per day.
  • Conducting hot plate tests on fabrics, batting systems, and camping mattresses
  • Weighing samples and measuring other properties, such as packing volume of sleeping bags.
  • Entering data and managing test photo files.
  • Packaging and arranging return shipping of test samples

This position requires standing, bending lifting, and carrying up to 25lbs.  Approximately 10-20% of the time is spent at a desk/computer in the office, with the remainder spent working in the lab.  It is a full-time, hourly position.  Start date is negotiable but March 2023 is preferred.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • U.S. citizenship is required (needed for military contracts involving product testing)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in a science-related science field
  • Must be detail-oriented
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., be able to set up spreadsheets and graphs using Microsoft Excel, and type documents and tables using Microsoft Word)
