The farm manager is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the crop and livestock systems at the Center. The farm manager receives input/requests for work from the various faculty conducting research at the centers. The farm manager, in conjunction with the department head, prioritizes research requests and ongoing operations. Farm manager has latitude to schedule labor and inputs to meet objectives of research/production and provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what must be done, limitations, quality and quantity expectations, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervising faculty provide additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction or close supervision, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions or experience to the supervising faculty for decision or help. The supervisor assures that finished work and methods used are those desired. Review of work depends on complexity of the task and incumbent’s familiarity with the task.

Research Assistant Parsons, Kansas
In this role you'll help drive innovation in agronomy/crop systems. Daily tasks will vary but will include the hands on operation and management in the crop and forage operations at the Southeast Research and Extension center and outlying farms and fields including Mound Valley and Columbus locations. The headquarters facility at Parsons will be home base for the position with crop and forage production research, including variety trials, as a main emphasis. The center conducts research on corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers, wheat and a variety of forage and cover crops. The station is also home to a beef cattle operation which includes a research feed yard and a herd of beef cows. Your role will encompass all aspects of crop and forage production including tillage, fertilizer/herbicide/pesticide application, harvesting, equipment maintenance and repair, data collection, soil sampling, crop scouting among other duties including some lab work. You'll play a critical role in crop and forage production and be engaged with agronomy research at the facility and across the center. You'll provide team support to cattle and crop production across locations in the center.
Animal Technician Supervisor Manhattan, Kansas
This position will function as the assistant manager of the Dairy Teaching and Research Center and is responsible for ensuring the safety of the cows and other diary unit employees.The incumbent will assume responsibility for operation of the dairy unit in the manager's absence. Incumbent is responsible for milking cows at least two days each week and for making vital animal observations during the milking process. Supervises and trains student assistants in proper milking procedures and other general dairy farm duties. This person will offer assistance when required in performing daily routines. Practices and teaches safety precautions at all times. Maintains and administers a continuing education program for all employees involved in animal care and equipment maintenance.
