About This Role:

This position provides essential workload and responsibility for the KSU swine unit associated with animal care, health, and well-being as well as supporting research efforts.

Some of the duties and responsibilities are as follows.

Assists and supports the research efforts at the KSU swine teaching and research center, especially that conducted within the farrowing and nursery phases of production. Support the activities of graduate student-led research efforts to ensure that equipment and facilities are ready to accomplish the protocol objectives.

Monitor and assist sows when needed during the farrowing process. Responsible for overseeing daily feeding and watering of sows located in the farrowing house. Responsible for overseeing general health and well-being of sows when in the farrowing house. Responsible for managing the farrowing house equipment and environment. Cleaning and disinfection of environment between groups. Enter data on data recording databases when needed.

Assure animal health and well-being of nursery piglets is achieved. Responsible for overseeing daily feeding and water availability of nursery pigs. Responsible for managing the nursery room equipment and environment. Cleaning and disinfection of environment between groups. Enter data on data recording databases when needed.

Support and enforce farm biosecurity principles established by herd veterinarian, faculty supervisor, and farm manager.

Interact with farm veterinarian, faculty supervisor, other farm full time staff, and undergraduate work force to ensure other activities on the farm are completed and supporting optimum health and well-being of animals. Assist with day-to-day activities on the rest of the farm when required. Ability to operate tractor or other equipment as needed. Support other duties as assigned related to teaching, research, and extension.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • No minimum requirements. Some positions may require additional education (or relevant experience) that will be specified on the position description. Various training and/or certification may be required. This position is covered by the Kansas Association of Public Employees (KAPE) agreement.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with animals, feeding and care.
  • Experience with data entry
  • Experience cleaning of pens and maintenance of other equipment and facilities as necessary
  • Experience with research related projects and protocol

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License
