About This Role

The Department of Art at Kansas State University is seeking a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Visual Communication Design, with a creative research and/or industry trajectory in an area of digital design. This could include (but is not limited to) areas of interaction, user interface, user experience, web and mobile, information visualization, or motion design.

The ideal candidate will combine strong teaching of core design fundamentals such as typography and composition, with robust experience in an area of digital design.

VCD faculty at K-State generally work with students at all levels of the undergraduate design curriculum, as well as departmental graduate students, with a typical teaching load of 2/3. K-State is an R1 research university; faculty are expected to maintain a healthy creative research and/or industry practice. Teaching summer courses under a separate contract is possible for those who might wish to do so.

The successful candidate will also possess excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills, with an interest in engaging with communities and opportunities found in the context of a large research university.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop course curricula and teach undergraduate courses in visual communication design, including digital design
  • Integrate introductory and advanced digital design techniques and industry standards into course content and assignments
  • Foster an engaging learning environment and student community
  • Advise and mentor students on academic projects, design portfolios, and career development
  • Collaborate with faculty and industry partners to enhance the department’s design initiatives
  • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees and governance, and university events
  • Conduct professional practice and/or other research relevant to design, contributing

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or terminal degree in Design or a related field

  • Expertise in an area of digital design, with a strong portfolio that demonstrates proficiency with design fundamentals, methods, tools, and technologies

  • Track record of effective teaching of design concepts and techniques at the university level

  • Ability to integrate contemporary design practices and methods into teaching and research

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills

  • Teaching experience beyond graduate school preferred, but not required
