About This Role:

The A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at Kansas State University seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Advertising and Public Relations (Ad & PR).  The successful candidate will teach a variety of core advertising and public relations courses in the newly redesigned curriculum, develop graduate and undergraduate electives in the area of interest, have research interests in strategic communication (e.g. health/risk/crisis communication, reputation management, advertising and brand communication), digital innovation, emerging media, and related areas that align with the current faculty research focus. They will also demonstrate the potential to advance Kansas State University’s Next-Gen goals.   

 

What is expected: 

  • Teach a variety of undergraduate skills-based and theoretical core courses in the Ad & PR curriculum (e.g. Principles of Advertising/PR, Ad & PR Writing, Research for Ad & PR, Ideation and Strategic Planning, Ad & PR Campaigns), digital, emerging, and social media courses, and other program electives based on the candidate’s interest area. 

  • Teach graduate-level courses in research, theory, or other topics related to research interests and as needed by the school upon admission as a graduate faculty. 

  • Continue a vibrant and engaging research agenda, developing a sustainable and impactful track record of original research in strategic communication including advertising, public relations, corporate or organizational communication, leadership communication, artificial intelligence, digital wellness, emerging media, or other relevant areas, commensurate with school, college, and university expectations regarding tenure and promotion. 

  • Advise graduate students and serve on thesis/project committees after attaining graduate faculty status. 

  • Apply for internal and extramural research grants individually or through multidisciplinary collaborations to support research and teaching where applicable. 

  • Engage in school, university, and community service, as well as program of service and outreach with advertising and public relations professionals and media organizations.  

  • Support our accreditation efforts in alignment with standards outlined by our accrediting body.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctorate in mass communication, communication, or related field. ABD applicants, with an effective research record, teaching experience, and the expectation of completing the doctoral degree by August 2025, will be considered. For these candidates, cover letters should outline plans and timelines for degree completion and at least one referee should be able to confirm said timelines. 

  • Prior experience teaching courses similar to those in the Advertising and Public Relations Degree Program at the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication.  

  • Evidence of a programmatic line of research and/or creative work and/or evidence of a likely research and creative work agenda sufficient to earn tenure. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a part of a dynamic and engaged faculty and staff team. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach the core courses in advertising and public relations, as well as other areas in digital and social media and communication. 

  • Strong research skills and ability to teach research methods in the undergraduate and graduate programs. 

  • Professional experience in public relations, advertising, marketing or areas related to strategic communications. 

  • Teaching experience or expertise in new technologies and social media strategies. 

  • Desire to advise student organizations (Ad Club, PRSSA, etc) to support the creation and launch of competition teams. 

  • Commitment to community engagement and outreach activities. 

  • Evidence or demonstrated willingness to procure outside funding for research activities.
