About Kansas State College Advising Corps (KSCAC)

KSCAC is a college access program aiming to support high school students in finding their best-fit postsecondary pathway. As part of the College Advising Corps network, KSCAC aims to increase the number of first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students who enter and complete higher education. We hire recent college graduates to serve as College Advisers full-time in high schools across the state of Kansas. Our College Advisers work closely with students to ensure that they are aware of all options, whether it be community college, four-year university, workforce, or military.

 

Serve as a College Adviser

College advisers and gain invaluable leadership, work, and life skills that are necessary and transferable to any profession. Being an adviser is a transformative experience, contributing to a national movement to ensure all students have access to economic mobility and success.

College Advisers aim to help students find a “best-fit” post-secondary opportunity in order to increase the likelihood of post-secondary success in college or career. Additionally, advisers create and foster a college-going culture by engaging administration, teachers, and staff to help build an environment that encourages and supports college attendance and completion. The advisers are available to assist all students and families.

Day-to-day, College Advisers will report to their high school site placement in order to:

  • Advise students through individual, small group, and classroom settings
  • Provide guidance in all aspects of the college and career planning process
  • Review college applications with students
  • Host a variety of college planning and financial aid workshops
  • Facilitate campus tours
  • Assist with ACT preparation and registration
  • Ensure student participation in college exploration opportunities, such as college fairs, summer programs, and campus representative visits
  • Produce and disseminate materials targeted to family and community members
  • Help students find scholarship resources
  • Assist students in understanding and completing the FAFSA as well as related forms

Where We Serve

Advisers work at one high school in a full-time, in-person capacity in one of the following regions:

  • Kansas City
  • Southwestern Kansas
  • Wichita

We currently have openings at F.L. Schlagle High School, Shawnee Mission North High School, and Washington High School in Kansas City, as well as Mulvane High School in Wichita.

 

 

Worksite Options:

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed full-time and in-person at the assigned high school.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Verbal and written communications skills
  • Organizational skills, including the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks while under pressure
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Able to work in a diverse and changing environment
  • Experience working with youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Experience or knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes
  • Verbal and written communication skills in Spanish

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license required at time of employment.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
