About This Role:

This full-time, benefits eligible position offers a unique opportunity to participate in food production for JP’s Sports Grill a retail restaurant serving the on-campus and Manhattan community. Prepares food and coordinates food production using made-to-order cooking methods suitable for a restaurant environment.  Makes production assignments and provides on the job instruction for part-time staff.

This position offers the opportunity to prepare quality food in a diverse team environment dedicated to providing and supporting a “guest first” service culture and to demonstrate work habits that support a goal oriented team environment. 

Duties include:

  • Prepare and serve high quality food using made-to-order cooking methods appropriate for a restaurant environment.
  • Provide culinary food preparation and production support for restaurant catering orders. Follow menus and use standardized recipes to produce food products. 
  • Coordinate food production and service and meets all timelines. 
  • Taste and evaluate products.
  • Assign production tasks and provide on the job instruction and training to hourly student employees.  Monitor compliance to quality standards. 
  • Perform cleaning, maintenance/sanitation activities. 
  • Attend scheduled meetings and job training sessions.   
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with students, customers and management staff.
  • Cultivate and maintain harmonious work relationships.

Worksite Options:

The service nature of this position requires work on-site.  Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in commercial/institutional cooking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years cooking experience in a restaurant setting.
  • Considerable knowledge of “from scratch” batch food preparation, equipment, health sanitation, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to develop and maintain congenial work relationships with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to accurately weigh and measure ingredients, to present prepared food attractively, to use and care for equipment and handle food safely while preparing high quality products.
  • High school graduation/GED.
  • Prefer ServSafe certification.

Other Requirements:

  • Moderate physical exertion is required to perform the essential functions of the position.  This includes, but is not limited to, lifting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, repetitive movement, transporting items up to 50 lbs.
