About This Role:

Conduct thorough inspections of landscapes to identify pests, diseases, weeds, and other factors affecting plant health. Implement customized treatment plans based on the specific needs of each landscape, considering factors such as plant species, environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements. Apply fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals safely and efficiently using appropriate equipment and techniques to minimize environmental impact and ensure effectiveness. Maintain spray equipment in good working condition by performing regular inspections, cleaning, and calibration to ensure accurate application rates and minimize risks to plant health and safety. Keep detailed electronic records of treatments applied, quantities used, areas treated, and any observations regarding treatment effectiveness or unexpected outcomes. Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations governing the handling, storage, and application of chemicals, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following product labels and manufacturer instructions.

The Grounds Maintenance Department is responsible for the maintenance and installation of all turfgrass, shrubs, trees and annual flower beds on campus.

Duties / Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weed whipping, mowing, pulling and hoeing weeds, raking leaves, picking up trash and debris, cleaning sidewalks, mulching, and snow removal by operating various tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Perform plumbing duties to operate, maintain, repair, and install irrigation systems on campus grounds. 
  • Perform electrical duties to operate, maintain, repair, and install irrigation systems on campus grounds.
  • Perform minor repairs to tools and equipment in the Grounds Department and provide supervision of student workers and subordinate employees as required.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirement:

  • Requires four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in landscape maintenance, pest control, or chemical application is desirable.
  • Six months of experience in equipment operation
  • Knowledge of the general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light to medium maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of lighter and some heavy equipment
  • Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of grounds, tree, and shrub care

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license upon employment.
  • Some positions may require attainment of a commercial driver’s license.
  • Must acquire 3A and 3B Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Stay informed about current trends, best practices, and advancements in landscape management, pest control, and chemical applications through ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and GIS mapping.
