General Information:

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University is offering a three year Equine Internal Medicine Residency. The overall goal of the residency program is to provide training and experience to qualify the candidate for certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).  This program is approved by the ACVIM, follows the General Information Guidelines (GIG) from the ACVIM (www.ACVIM.org) for training residents, and is directed by 6 LAIM diplomates (3 equine, 3 food animal) of ACVIM.  There are 1-2 rotating interns, 1-2 medicine residents, and 2 surgery residents.  The equine residency is further supported by board certified faculty in anesthesiology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology, surgery (including one emergency clinician), and radiology.

The annual total large animal caseload is approximately 2,200 equine hospital accessions per year, approximately 25% cases are managed by the internal medicine service.  The training program is focused on equine medicine.  However, Livestock Services medicine cross-training will be provided by participation in weekly combined (with livestock services medicine faculty and house officers) journal clubs, book clubs and mortality and morbidity rounds each week.  The resident is expected to spend 2-4 weeks (at a minimum) in the Livestock Services section rotations.

Clinical and Emergency Duty

The resident will be directly supervised by one of the equine ACVIM diplomates on the equine medicine rotation.  The resident will be on clinics approximately 60-75 % on clinics each year.  There is flexibility in the schedule to accommodate time required for scholarly activity.  The time on clinics will be focused on equine medicine, but time will also be available to rotate through food animal, radiology, clinical pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology, or other services if the residents desires.  The remaining week of clinics will be used for scholarly activity (research projects and writing), time for studying for the general and specialty examination, external rotations, and vacation.  The resident will be on emergency approximately 50% of the time (which will likely be divided into primary and secondary backup emergency duty).  Faculty back up for emergencies will be provided by ACVIM faculty or the emergency clinician. 

In addition to management of hospitalized patients, the resident will provide clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students while on clinics.  The resident will be expected to give 1 didactic lecture to the 4th year students on equine every 30 days.  Residents may be asked to participate in a 3rd year a basic clinical skills laboratory in the fall semester.  Residents are also required to present two lectures to the clinical sciences faculty twice a year.  It is expected that residents will have at least one publishable manuscript within the first two years.  

Residents receive semi-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Resident Advisor and Hospital Director. Annual reappointment is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.

Graduate Program:

Enrollment in the graduate school and completion of a program leading to a Master of Science degree is required for most residents (this may be waived if the resident already has a graduate degree).   However, all residents are required to complete a research project.   Entry into the MS program does require prior approval to the graduate school at Kansas State University (https://www.k-state.edu/grad/).  Funding for the research project is dependent upon funds available from the faculty advisor.  The graduate student will be responsible for paying tuition and fees (however, in some years tuition has been provided by funds from the equine section).
