About This Role:
The Nouri lab in the Department of Plant Pathology at Kansas State University is hiring a Post Doc to study the biology and molecular biology of a newly identified sub-viral RNA. Wheat umbra-like virus (WULV) is a new subviral RNA infecting wheat as its natural host. We successfully constructed a full-length cDNA clone of WULV infecting wheat as well as the model plant, Nicotiana benthamiana. To address the current knowledge gaps, this project aims to study interactions between WULV and the host at the molecular and cellular levels, determine the function of two encoded proteins of WULV through site-directed mutagenesis, and investigate the viral genome evolution.
This project has tremendous potential for highly motivated individuals. This work will involve developing, evaluating, and optimizing molecular/ sequencing/ microscopy techniques, with emphasis on cloning, RNA isolation, advanced PCR techniques, northern and western blot analysis, Yeast two-hybrid cDNA library construction and screening, transient protein expression in plant and protoplasts, and confocal microscopy.
The candidate must have strong molecular biology background and experience with general molecular techniques (advanced cloning, RNA and DNA work, Yeast two-hybrid screening). Prior work with plants/protoplasts and confocal microscopy is strongly preferred. The candidate will help to determine research goals and prepare scientific manuscripts, reporting research methodology, results, and interpretations in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
