About This Role:

The purpose of this Research Assistant Professor position is to coordinate BCI research efforts, manage project budgets, provide supervision of research assistants/graduate students, and assist in teaching. The qualified applicant will be responsible for managing projects including defining and adhering to project budgets and timelines.  This individual will need to possess skills in all aspects of livestock research including experimental design, authoring protocols, designing data capture forms, performing statistical analysis, interpreting results, and generating outcomes in the form of public presentations and peer-reviewed manuscripts. Experience in project management and beef cattle research is important as this individual will work independently.

80%    Research

  • Provide leadership and project management to achieve research mission
  • Setting and adhering to research project goals
  • Determining budget requirements and monitoring research expenditures
  • Providing fiscal management for research projects
  • Managing resource allocation to achieve project goals
  • Supervising research personnel across multiple research endeavors
  • Manage research assistant and student data collection process
  • Maintaining and building collaborative research relationships internally and externally
  • Project outcome evaluation including dissemination (written manuscripts, oral presentations)
  • Designing research proposals and applying for funding (federal grants and other)
  • Completing and monitoring necessary regulatory information (e.g. IRB, IACUC) for trials

10%    Personnel management

  • Supervise research assistants to ensure project goals are completed in timely fashion
  • Manage hourly employees optimizing time allocation for each project relative to budget requirements
  • Provide leadership to graduate students / supervise research data collection and analysis

10%    Teaching

  • Provide didactic and discussion based teaching in veterinary food animal courses including but not limited to: Advanced Feedlot Production Medicine, Advanced Cow-Calf production Medicine, and Beef Production Medicine
  • Work directly with veterinary students enrolled in the Food Animal Certificate program to provide guidance on meeting FAVC requirements
  • Assist faculty in teaching graduate level courses including but not limited to: applied production medicine seminar and research design in livestock field trials

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Veterinary degree or equivalent
  • PhD
  • Project management for beef cattle research trials
  • Experience in feed yard environment including animal health management and conducting research trials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Writing and publishing scientific manuscripts
  • Statistical skills and knowledge with specific knowledge in R or similar
