About This Role:

The Division of Biology seeks a Research technician.  This position designs, builds and implements analyses in lab and field environments using scientific techniques and equipment related to fields including microbiology, pathology, ecology, botany, physiology and natural resources. Requires practical theoretical knowledge employed to alter analytical strategies and utilizes those changes to collect data. Directs experimental protocols and alters those protocols to meet project needs. Prepares descriptions of techniques used in lab and field research and gathers, examines and describes data gathered from research. Performs minor administrative duties, such as maintaining supply inventories and writing reports. This position reports to the appropriate administrator.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a high school diploma.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Biology or related field.
  • Experience with field-based research, preparedness for work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Specific experience in grazing utilization measurement, various approaches to soil sampling including subsoil collection (Geoprobe), health and fertility assays, and sample collection using appropriate handling for microbiology and chemistry analysis.
  • Specific experience with 96-well plate based chemical and biochemical assays, DNA extraction of standard and low biomass samples, and PCR based applications, including quantitative PCR of housekeeping and functional gene loci.
  • Specific experience in with data and metadata organization including proficiency with Excel and Word software, and hierarchical organization of both raw and derived data products in association with sample and analysis metadata attributes, in preparation for databasing.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
