About This Role:
The Kansas Artificial Breeding Services Unit (KABSU) is a unit within the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University that provides reproductive resources to livestock, equine and canine customers throughout Kansas and neighboring states. It is a self-funded fee-for-service business unit. This position will perform duties relevant to the daily activities of the Kansas Artificial Breeding Service Unit's Collection, Laboratory and Housing facilities.
10% Daily customer communication is required regarding bull entry and discharge information and documents.
10% Collect bull health testing samples in accordance with the National Association of animal Breeders (NAAB) and Certified Semen Service (CSS) regulations and guidelines. Samples with accurate sample identification and submission information will be forwarded to the appropriate Diagnostic Laboratory for requested testing.
40% Assist with the daily feeding, care and management of all bulls housed at the KABSU facility. An individual daily record of feeding and health activity for each bull will be documented and reviewed weekly by the KABSU facility Animal Health Officer. Some weekend care of facility housed livestock may be required on a rotational basis among staff members.
40% Collect bovine semen samples from bulls located at the KABSU facility and from bulls on client ranches using recognized industry procedures for maximizing sperm harvest. Samples with accurate sample identification and accession information will be forwarded to the KABSU Laboratory for quality evaluation. Some day travel is required with occasional overnight necessary.
