About This Role:

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Nurse III to join our dedicated Anesthesia team to help provide exemplary patient care. This position plays a vital role in providing clinical and anesthetic support for the veterinary staff in caring for patients in need of surgical procedures. This position provides advanced nursing care through engaging responsibilities such as premedication, anesthesia induction, level maintenance, and patient recovery from anesthesia. This position will also provide specialized support for oncology radiation therapy patients. Nurses are given the opportunity to advance their skillset through continuing education and various learning experiences. Working hours for Veterinary Nurses in this position will include daytime hours Monday-Friday. This position will also include some after-hours and weekend on-call/standby coverage. Excellent communication and leadership skills are utilized daily in this position.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of a two-year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and five years of relevant experience as a veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) after passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic veterinary medical concepts, animal behavior and animal husbandry.
  • Additional advanced knowledge of nursing care and assigned service requirements and policies.
  • Ability to perform general diagnostic procedures and technical tasks associated with emergency medical care.
  • Ability to work with and provide preventative maintenance for ordinary veterinary medical hospital equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to appropriate safety procedures.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and be proactive in assisting others.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in high intensity environment.
  • Ability to handle, restrain, and provide medical treatments to domestic animals.
  • Skilled in time management and prioritizing daily responsibilities.
  • Skilled in interpersonal and written communication.
  • Skilled in basic computer skills.
  • Be willing to master new techniques.
  • Skilled in interpersonal and written communication.

Other Requirements:

  • The College of Veterinary Medicine requires that new hires in any level must obtain a Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician within 6 months of employment.
