Biosafety Animal Technician in Manhattan, Kansas
This individual will assist the supervisory Animal Health Officer with broad support and coordination of activities associated with infectious disease research and food security studies. Responsibilities include waste management, decontamination, adherence to animal welfare regulations, assisting research teams in project planning and operational logistics, and training research staff on procedures, protocols and equipment operation. Duties include report generation, database inputs and user interface, work with large animals (livestock) and small lab animals (rodents and rabbits) in BSL-3 and ABSL3-Ag research projects, assisting with coordinating animal space use, assisting with technical procedures involving animals as required for research projects, decontaminating spaces and equipment and equipment with specialized technologies, and removal and decontamination of waste via alkaline hydrolysis tissue digestion equipment and autoclave sterilization. Position also supports necessary coordination for unique biocontainment areas used in food safety and security studies. Position requires evening/night, weekend, and/or holiday swing shifts as well as a variable on-call schedule as required to provide 7 days/week, 365 days/year animal care coverage.

Reno County covers 1,254 square miles in south-central Kansas. Hutchinson is the county seat and home to the Reno County Extension office. It is one of the largest agriculture-producing counties in the state and ranks #1 in the number of farms (1,552) and #3 in the number of acres in production (788,966). There is a growing interest in small acreage homesteading in Reno County and a very active 4-H youth livestock program. This position will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of research-based educational programming related to agriculture and natural resources. Programming may include but is not limited to: agronomy; livestock production; agricultural economics, management, and public policy; small-scale farming and homesteading; and natural resources conservation and environmental stewardship.
