The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Nurse I, II, or III to join our dedicated Small Animal Surgery team. Though there are many responsibilities of someone in the role, the primary responsibilities are to assist in providing quality veterinary patient care and help with procedures for client, teaching, and research animals within the VHC. Nurses in this position play a vital role in providing support for busy surgery schedules, assisting with educational opportunities, and contributing to meaningful research. Nurses are given the opportunity to advance their skillset through continuing education and various learning experiences. Excellent communication and leadership skills are utilized daily in this position. Normal work hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm with a rotating emergency on-call schedule.

This position holds many engaging responsibilities including helping to provide vital care for critical patients, operating medical equipment, and performing or assisting in technical procedures. Nurses on this team assist in day-to-day responsibilities like monitoring medical records, organizing technical work, maintaining equipment and supply statuses, as well as coordinating animal treatments. Veterinary Nurses have the opportunity to advance their skillsets through continuing education and various learning experiences. The VHC also has an established career ladder for veterinary nurses to provide opportunities for professional advancements. Veterinary Nurses in this position work 12-hour shifts three days per week. Communication and collaboration skills will be utilized daily.

While there are many responsibilities of this position, the primary responsibility is to work collaboratively with veterinary students, interns, residents, and faculty clinicians to provide medical and radiation oncology treatments for patients. Communication and leadership skills are utilized daily to facilitate treatment schedules, coordinate student orientations, and assist in communication with clients. Veterinary Nurses have the opportunity to advance their skillsets through continuing education, various learning experiences, and subspecialty certifications recognized by NAVTA. This position provides advanced nursing care through engaging responsibilities such as premedication, anesthesia induction, level maintenance, and patient recovery from anesthesia. This position will also provide specialized support for oncology radiation therapy patients. Nurses are given the opportunity to advance their skillset through continuing education and various learning experiences. Working hours for Veterinary Nurses in this position will include daytime hours Monday-Friday. This position will also include some after-hours and weekend on-call/standby coverage. This position plays a vital role in overseeing our nursing staff for the Medicine Section which includes Internal Medicine, Hill’s Pet Health, Urgent Care, Emergency, Dermatology, and Oncology services. Nursing Supervisors provide a high-level of input on patient care and helps to direct the work flow in various areas of the hospital. This position holds many responsibilities including the assigning of daily tasks, management of staff hours, establishing of performance standards, and helping in the growth and development of veterinary nurses. This position is given the opportunity to advance their skillset through continuing education and various learning experiences. Working hours for Nursing Supervisors in this position will primarily include daytime hours Monday-Friday with occasional variances. Excellent communication and leadership skills are utilized daily.
