About This Role

The Office of Veterans Affairs, a subunit of the Office of Student Financial Assistance, seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Director, VA Educational Benefits.  This leadership position will be responsible for maintaining the University’s compliance with the GI Bill® by performing the following responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight of the bi-annual reapproval process communicating with the State Approving Agency (SAA) conducting the site visit. 
  • Oversee the VA compliance survey communicating with the Federal VA auditor.
  • Oversee successful submission and approval of the University academic catalog to the SAA to ensure academic programs are eligible for VA certification.
  • Interpret federal VA regulations and policies; ensure the unit’s policy and procedure manual is current and up to date.
  • Ensure all School Certifying Officials (SCOs) complete the required amount of training to remain current with VA training.

The position provides robust and strategic leadership by:

  • Implementing changes to business practices to gain efficiency in the delivery of benefits and to successfully address compliance requirements.
  • Supervising all full-time staff members; plan and direct the day-to-day work activities of the unit.
  • Oversee, directly or indirectly, the VA work-study program as the unit’s primary supervisor. Ensure compliance with all regulations governing the program.

The position coordinates, directs, and assists with processing tasks, including:

  • Certify requested VA benefits by entering data in the VA’s system; adjust or amend certifications if changes in enrollment or tuition/fees occur.
  • Audit or reconcile individual student accounts when VA tuition payment arrives.
  • Resolve institutional debt letters when excess funds were received from the VA for specific student accounts.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the administration of Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits
  • Able to research and interpret complex laws and regulations
  • Able to provide leadership, management, and direction to achieve unit goals
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Strong attention to details and precision/accuracy in completing tasks
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong customer service skills, including public speaking for group presentations or training
  • Experience in working with IT support in the creation or modification of reports

Other Requirements:

  • Condition of employment requires the individual to be recognized as a School Certifying Official with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in good standing. (Employment pending successful completion of this required certification is at the discretion of the hiring agency.)
  • Individuals may not be in default on a federal student loan and/or owe an overpayment on a federal student grant - to ensure that the individual may be issued access to various U.S. Department of Education databases.
