About This Role

The financial aid advisor will counsel current and prospective students on the availability and eligibility requirements associated with various forms of student financial assistance drawing upon a robust understanding of federal, state and institutional guidelines.  Tasks include:

  • Assists students through the application process by assisting with the completion of forms or answering questions,
  • Identifies and presents financial options to students to assist with funding their education,
  • Provides quality customer service through the use of various modes of communication (zoom meetings, in-person meetings, email, and phone calls) which requires excellent verbal and written communication skills,
  • Conducts group presentations to various audience sizes on a variety of topics.

The individual in this position will exercise professional judgment by reviewing various types of financial aid appeals.  Tasks include:

  • Reviews unusual or special circumstance appeals and requests supporting documentation to substantiate the adjustment made to the student’s application,
  • Maintains knowledge by keeping current with any changes in federal or state financial aid programs.

The financial aid advisor will serve as a resource to students encountering financial crisis by performing the following tasks:

  • Advises students in financial duress by gathering more information from the student to connect the student with the appropriate resources where possible,
  • Manages a limited pool of institutional need-based funds and awarding where applicable.

The person in this position will support various forms of processing to ensure a smooth delivery of financial aid to students.  These tasks include:

  • Adjusts financial aid awarded to keep within the student’s need or cost of attendance.  These adjustments are necessary due to additional resources the student receives or changes in anticipated enrollment.
  • Counsels students who plan to study abroad or wish to participate in a consortium agreement by informing the student of the necessary steps.
  • Determines eligibility of summer financial aid for students planning to enroll in the summer semester.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree.
  • This position may use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in conducting advising/counseling sessions
  • 2-3 years employment within an administrative office at a post-secondary institution of higher education
  • 1-2 years employment within a financial aid office
  • 2 or more years employment within an administrative position requiring the completion of complex forms and/or the interpretation of complex regulations and/or the utilization of calculations/formulas as a job duty and/or high level of customer service.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license upon and during employment
  • Individuals may not be in default on a federal student loan and/or owe an overpayment on a federal student grant - to ensure that the individual may be issued access to various US Department of Education databases critical to carrying out job duties.
