About This Role

The College of Agriculture seeks an IT Support Specialist II to provide advanced technical support and infrastructure management for users within the College across general IT, research computing, laboratory, classroom, and audio/visual technologies. This role involves complex troubleshooting and resolution of hardware, software, operating system, network, and IT application issues for faculty, staff, researchers, and students. The incumbent supports research data management and provides technical leadership for IT initiatives. This position requires independent decision-making, the ability to mentor junior staff, and expertise in supporting specialized research computing environments. The incumbent may be tasked with delivering IT training. This is an on-site position with required travel to research facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide advanced telephone, in-person, email, remote, and chat support for successful use of technology in research and academic environments
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems for end-users including hardware, software, network, and security issues in a timely manner
  • Administer and support macOS and Windows operating systems in physical and virtual environments
  • Manage Microsoft Intune Endpoint Management solution for Windows and macOS devices, including enrollment, configuration profiles, and app deployment
  • Support research-specific software applications and scientific data workflows
  • Assist in management and maintenance of server and storage systems
  • Troubleshoot issues with routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems
  • Implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices and IT security protocols
  • Develop, implement, and maintain secure data storage solutions tailored to research project requirements
  • Establish and monitor backup protocols to ensure data integrity and prevent loss
  • Manage data storage, access permissions, and data transfer processes
  • Collaborate with information security teams to ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and funding agency standards
  • Conduct assessments of data management systems to identify and resolve vulnerabilities
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot computer hardware, software applications, audio/visual equipment, printers, specialized laboratory and research equipment, and operating systems
  • Design, deploy, and upgrade classroom, laboratory, conference room, and research computing technology
  • Perform system monitoring, log review, and proactive maintenance tasks
  • Coordinate updates and patches to minimize impact on users
  • Manage inventory and distribution of computing hardware and licensed software
  • Comply with state, university, and departmental policies regarding the installation and use of technology
  • Consult with faculty, staff, researchers, and colleagues to assess computational and research technology needs and provide appropriate guidance
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation including procedures, troubleshooting guides, system configurations, and training materials
  • Provide training programs and guidance to users on effective use of IT resources, security protocols, and best practices in data management
  • Create documentation for support issues, resolutions, and procedures in the help desk system
  • Translate complex technical requirements into practical, accessible solutions for non-technical users
  • Recommend and implement improvements to existing procedures and infrastructure

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two years of relevant experience. Requirements may be met through a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • Three(3) or more years of experience in technical support role with increasing responsibility
  • Experience with academic or research computing environments
  • Scripting experience (Bash, PowerShell, Python) for automation
  • Experience with storage technologies including iSCSI, NAS, and SAN
  • Knowledge of research data management practices and compliance standards
  • Knowledge of storage technologies and backup solutions
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals and best practices in system administration
  • Familiarity with research compliance frameworks (HIPAA, data security guidelines)
  • Knowledge of audio/visual systems and conferencing technologies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with focus on customer service
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with ability to diagnose complex technical issues
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and make technical decisions
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
