About This Role

The lead payroll tax specialist will be responsible for the university tax filing for all foreign national students relating to payroll, stipends, and excess aid. In addition, this position will work with Financial Operations to help support tax filing for non-resident alien vendor set up, tax collection and reporting to the state. This position serves as the University expert for nonresident alien taxes. The lead payroll tax specialist prepares and audits biweekly payrolls and completes payroll transactions and changes adhering to established policies and procedures to meet anticipates deadlines. In addition to reconciling payroll, the incumbent prepares and submits federal, FICA, and state income tax deposits, employer contributions, and special allowances, prepares journal entries and reconciles payroll and tax ledger accounts and W-2s and possesses a thorough knowledge of payroll tax regulations.

Worksite Description

This position is Hybrid eligible. This position is hybrid eligible; however, we require the first 90 days to be 100% on-site. After that period, hybrid eligibility will be evaluated based on individual performance.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  •  Associate degree plus four years of relevant experience (educational equivalency may apply)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate complex information to individuals, including non-native English speakers
  • Experience with nonresident alien tax compliance and tax treaties
  • Experience with payroll tax at the federal, state, and local levels with Student Employees
  • Experience with monthly, quarterly, and annual 941 tax filings, as well as the annual creation
  • Working knowledge of state and federal regulations and laws and understanding of the Kansas Board of Regents and Kansas State University policies and systems
  • Excellent logical, analytical, problem-solving, oral, and written communication skills
  • Able to meet critical deadlines and manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Customer service oriented with strong emotional intelligence skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and administrative personnel in other departments
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and tact in a professional setting
  • Ability and desire for independent learning
  • Previous Experience with PeopleSoft HRMS 9.2.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products including Excel, Word, Access, Visio, and PowerPoint
