About This Role

This position provides specialized veterinary support and performs semi-routine tasks to assist with laboratory needs during junior surgery and clinical skills courses, as well as assisting with other DCS courses. Duties will include working with large animals and shelter dogs. The fall semester primarily works with shelter dogs and the spring semester is large animal focused and labs consist of bovine, equine and small ruminant patients. The employee provides assistance in the care of patients through independently performing technical procedures and administering treatments. This position requires the ability to be a forward thinker. The ability to anticipate the next step or anticipating the need for extra safety measures in relation to student/personnel safety or biosecurity measures. The successful candidate should be an effective communicator.

In addition, this position may have some cross-training requirements with the Veterinary Health Center.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires completion of a two-year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and five years of relevant experience as a veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) after passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam. Must obtain a Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician within 6 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma & 2 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Completion of two year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Additional licenses / registrations / certifications:

  • The College of Veterinary Medicine requires that new hires must obtain a Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician within 6 months of employment. Advancing staff must have obtained their Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician prior to advancement.

Additional Role Information:

  • Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. All CVM employees must complete basic safety training. Newly hired laboratory personnel must complete all training before work may begin in the laboratory. All other personnel have 2 weeks to complete training.

Sponsorship eligibility:

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
