About This Role:

The Applied Aviation Research Center seeks multiple UAS interns this semester. These internship opportunities are specifically for students enrolled in the UAS Flight and Operations program and will serve as Student Flight Instructors. Flight Instructors will provide students training in UAS multi-rotor and/or fixed wing operations. Flight activities will include serving as a Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) or flight instructor for KDOT-sponsored Integration Pilot Program (IPP), which includes beyond visual line of sight operations (BVLOS). Interns are expected to work up to 30 hours per week. 


  • Provides instruction to unqualified students in multi-rotor and/or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Instruction will include ground-based instruction, simulator instruction, and flight instruction, to include “buddy box” instruction. 
  • Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, serving as Remote Pilot in Command
  • Makes recommendations on student progression to include stage checks and evaluations as well as corrective training when poor student progress warrants
  • Assists in development of courseware and curriculum as required, to include but not limited to development of simulator and flight profiles to ensure delivery of world-class training to students enrolled in degree programs as well as courses offered through Professional Education and Outreach
  • Includes flying BVLOS in support of the KDOT IPP, and providing training to KDOT-sponsored students seeking BVLOS qualification

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current Kansas State University student enrolled in the UAS Flight & Operations program
  • Proficient Remote Control (RC) or UAS flying skills
  • Successfully completed UAS 314
  • Be able to transport up to 50lbs
  • Be highly motivated and a team player
  • Able to work efficiently and with high integrity
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate
  • Successfully completed UAS 367
  • Successful completion of FAA Fundamentals of Instruction Course
  • Experience with building, maintaining, or modifying UAS or RC aircraft

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • FAA Private Pilot Certificate and Part 107 Certificate
