About This Role:

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Animal Technician I position. The purpose of this position is to provide more consistent coverage of assigned care and cleaning duties during late afternoon/evening hours in the Small Animal/Exotics section of the VHC. The position will interface with the other four Animal Technician I positions currently assigned to various shifts also providing coverage of the aforementioned areas.

The shift for this position is Tuesday-Saturday 3:00pm- 11:00pm.

Duties / Responsibilities

Provide patient care in assigned Small Animal/Exotics sections to include the following:

   A. Per written procedures and protocols as well as oral instruction clean, sanitize and/or disinfect all cages, kennels, treatment areas, and other areas as directed on a daily basis.

   B. Supply fresh water to patients unless otherwise directed, monitor food intake and/or feed as directed.

   C. Observe patients for questionable presentation and/or medical difficulties; notifying appropriate clinical staff and supervisor. Supervisor Section Heads, and Clinical Staff will monitor performance on a daily basis.

Provide ancillary patient care in the Small Animal/Exotics sections to include the following:

   A. Operate laundry and dishwashing equipment to clean, sanitize, and/or disinfect non-surgical linens, equipment, and dishware.

   B. Clean sanitize, and/or disinfect portable transport cages, mats, and carriers as well as the cage washing/storage area.

   C. Clean and maintain special services areas such as Ward Services, Isolation, etc. as assigned. This may include inventory, stocking, cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfection, as well as waste disposal for cleanliness and to discourage vermin. Special attention is to be given to the exercise yard from both a sanitation and public presentation standpoint.

   D. Report and record all pertinent data as directed by Supervisor or Clinical Staff. Supervisor, Section Heads, and Clinical Staff will monitor performance on a daily basis.

Provide additional in-house services to include the following:

   A. Maintain an adequate inventory of feedstuffs, learn the procedures involved in ordering and procuring feedstuffs and if directed order them in the absence of other personnel charged with this duty. Prepare and feed regular and special diets as directed.

   B. Familiarity with bathing and grooming procedures for patients as well as all equipment and products purchased and used in the procedures. Maintenance of bathing and grooming areas as well as equipment used for these tasks. Performance to be monitored daily by Supervisor, Section Heads and Clinical Staff.

   C. Prepare equipment for Physical Therapy procedures and assist if directed by clinical staff. Performance to be monitored by Supervisor, Section Heads, and Clinical Staff on a daily basis.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • No minimum requirements. Some positions may require additional education (or relevant experience) that will be specified on the position description. Various training and/or certification may be required. This position is covered by the Kansas Association of Public Employees (KAPE) agreement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School or Equivalent
  • 3 yrs Experience with Companion Animals/Exotics
  • Some College
  • Experience with Companion Animals/Exotics in a clinical, kennel, cattery, pet shop setting

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license once employed
