About This Role:

The Salina Upward Bound Program within the Department of Student Belonging & Inclusion at Kansas State University is seeking a temporary Staff Assistant (non-university student)/Mentor for the K-State Manhattan Campus. This position will provide supervision of the TRIO Upward Bound (UB) participants during the Upward Bound Summer Program.  The Staff Assistant will also serve as a Mentor to program participants.  The Upward Bounder Summer Program is June 3, 2024 – July 12, 2024, and the residential portion will be held June 11 - June 28, 2024, on the Manhattan Campus.

The mentor will facilitate small group activities and events and supervise TRIO Upward Bound participants residing on campus during the residential summer program and while attending college visits and cultural activities and events.

Upward Bound is a campus-based TRIO program designed to assist area high school students with additional academic preparation, advisement, and encouragement to succeed in high school and later in college.

The Upward Bound Program participants are involved in the program from the time they are selected for participation until they graduate from high school. The program offers a four-week summer program, which consists of residential and non-residential components and Saturday sessions during the academic year. Students must meet family income guidelines and/or be first-generation college bound.

There is no cost for participation in the program.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completed at least 2 college academic years by June 1, 2024 (junior, senior graduate student, or relevant experience) with at least a GPA of 3.0 and no academic problems, probations, or expulsions. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must attend the 1-day training on June 1, 21024.
  • Must live in the residence hall during the summer program (June 2-June 28, 2024).
  • Day shift staff must assist with community service and college visits.
  • Optional cultural trip during July 8-12, 2024, along with college visits.
  • Must be able to work early morning shifts or late evening shifts and participate in physical activities.
  • Must provide supervision for attending students.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
  • Must attend CPR, First-Aid, and AED training, provided as on-the-job training, unless you have current certification. 
  • Must be able to drive various vehicles (sedan, SUV’s, minivan, etc.)
