About This Role:

Kansas State University Libraries is seeking a creative, outreach-oriented individual to serve as the Department Head of the Center for Scholarly Publishing at K-State Libraries. This position will advance K-State Libraries’ central role in creating and supporting research and scholarship through strategic leadership and relationship-building. This position will report to the interim associate dean for research, education, & engagement.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to expand the Libraries’ many existing and emerging scholarly communication services, programs and priorities, which include the Open Alternative Textbook Initiative, copyright support, K-State Research Exchange, and New Prairie Press. In addition, this position will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to assess, shape and build upon the Libraries’ current portfolio of research support services.

This is a new position formed to support K-State Libraries’ strategic initiative (lib.k-state.edu/about/our-organization/strategic-plan) to elevate scholarly communication at K-State and the university’s strategic imperatives (k-state.edu/next-gen/plan/imperatives) of improving retention and graduation rates by providing open educational resources to students and growing our research enterprise with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate will be committed to fostering a culture of collaboration and exploration; demonstrate action in diversity, equity and inclusion in all facets of the role; articulate a clear understanding of research library responsibilities; and support the research lifecycle throughout all stages. The candidate will be encouraged to continue their teaching and research interests should they bring expertise in these areas to the position.

Core Responsibilities

The Department Head of the Center for Scholarly Publishing serve as a member of the Libraries’ leadership team and will work closely with other members of the Libraries’ faculty and staff to provide library-wide leadership, as well as oversight, and strategic development of key portfolio areas.

This position will: 

  • Lead the university community in navigating a complex and challenging publishing environment that includes open access; anticipating future changes; and implement new ideas to benefit K-State.
  • Lead and manage the CSP team while coordinating and facilitating interactions with other library and university departments.
  • Work collaboratively with subject liaisons, data services, content development, and AI librarians as well as other units on campus to develop, promote, and support open educational resources and other publishing endeavors.
  • Develop campus partnerships to support and coordinate data facilitation and services.
  • Evaluate and communicate developments in the scholarly communication landscape, including legislative, funding, and publishing trends.
  • Foster collaboration and build partnerships across the university to promote best practices in scholarship, copyright, and publishing.
  • Participate in grants and sponsored programs.
  • Investigate and implement solutions that advance the support of scholarly publishing (e.g. CRIS tools, etc.) by enhancing interdisciplinary work and establishing scholarly identities for faculty.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or terminal degree in a relevant academic field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the full research lifecycle of planning, implementing, digital scholarship, and publication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues, trends, and technologies related to academic research, open educational resources, scholarly communication practices, copyright, and research data management. 
  • Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including working collaboratively in a diverse and fast-paced environment. 
  • Record of appropriate scholarship and service for appointment to a tenure track position within K-State Libraries.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of continued leadership in an academic and/or research library. 
  • Experience supervising and managing faculty and staff.
  • Training or experience with data management workflows and research impact metrics.
