About This Role:

The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University (K-State) invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The college seeks an individual with the experience to provide leadership and administrative oversight for successful instructional, research and broad-based growth of programs in the department. The successful candidate will be a strong promoter of teaching, research, service and faculty development. The ideal candidate will:  

  • Lead the electrical and computing engineering department (ECE) as it increases the number of incoming and graduating students, develops new knowledge and disseminates information.   
  • Provide leadership and administrative actions for the department that advance the knowledge and application of engineering and technology to biomedical systems, communications and networks, embedded systems applications, and power and energy. 
  • Provide daily oversight and management for the ECE department, teaching and research programs; supervise the ECE office professionals; oversee/administer the departmental budget; facilitate grants, contracts and other external funding, and developmental support activities; foster a diverse and inclusive environment, and respond to college and university programmatic and informational requests.
  • Lead and support efforts to maintain ABET accreditation.  
  • Represent the ECE departmental faculty, students and programs at College of Engineering executive/leadership committees, other college/university functions and within engineering communities. 
  • Provide vision and leadership to advance the goals of K-State’s land-grant mission and ECE departmental strategic priorities. 
  • Facilitate external funding support and opportunities, including working with alumni; local, state, and federal agencies; industry partners; and the Kansas State University Foundation. 
  • Mentor and develop faculty and staff to grow professionally. 
  • Conduct scholarly research in expertise by leading projects or collaborating with other faculty members.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, a distinguished reputation in the electrical, computer and/or biomedical engineering community, and excellent interpersonal skills. A doctorate in electrical, computer and/or biomedical engineering or a closely related field is required. 

The Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State University has a rich tradition of teaching and advising excellence, interdisciplinary research and highly recognized outreach programs. Established programs of study and research include electrical engineering, computer engineering and biomedical engineering. 

The department head reports to the dean of the College of Engineering and is responsible for the administration of all programs and budgets of the department. Duties include working with faculty, staff and students to deliver outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering research efforts of the highest quality, and maintaining productive relationships and development activities with alumni, industry partners and government agencies.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree in electrical, computer and/or biomedical engineering or a closely related field. 
  • A strong record of teaching, research, service and proven leadership and administrative abilities.  
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively nurture talent and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of equal opportunity. 
  • Academic credentials and professional qualifications that merit appointment as a tenured full professor in the department.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to raise substantial external funding.  
  • Proven fiscal and managerial skills.  
  • A record of increasing administrative responsibility with demonstrated leadership. 
  • Engagement in national/international professional organizations.  
  • Demonstrated strategic vision in leading organizations and projects. 
  • A record of positive interaction with business, alumni and other relevant constituents.  
  • Ability to lead and facilitate a positive environment for continuing growth of the department and its endowment.

Anticipated Hiring Pay Range:

$150,000 - $225,000
