About this Role:

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Veterinary Nurse in Ophthalmology. A primary mission of the Hospital is to provide quality medical services for teaching, research and clients within the surrounding area. Quality, professional technical representation in the Ophthalmology Section is critical to providing services to support this mission. This position is structured to perform all technical aspects associated with providing quality ophthalmology services to clients of the KSU-VHC. The nurse in this position also has a large role in teaching various ophthalmology techniques to students and other employees of the VHC. This position is also responsible for coordination of animal treatments; instruct, train and supervise students and employees in approved treatment technique. This position is expected to demonstrate behavior that is conducive to harmonious working relationships with peers, subordinates, and supervisors.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Ophthalmic Animal Surgery Technical Responsibilities:
    • Prepare and maintain the surgical suites to provide sterile environment and adequate supplies.
    • Assists as a surgical team member by preparing animals for surgical procedures following induction.
    • Assist surgical team member by acting as circular during procedures, and maintaining and monitoring sterile technique in surgery areas.
    • Become familiar with surgical instrumentation and procedures.
    • Assist in maintaining the ophthalmology surgery log.
    • Assist with ophthalmology outreach events as requested.
  • Provide technical support for ophthalmology in the surgical inpatient and outpatient activities of this specialty area. Log communications with clients into hospital management system. Provide prompt client service by handling calls for new appointments, rechecks, prescription refills, and scheduling surgeries. Assist with the planning and coordination of ophthalmology services throughout the KSU-VHC. Assist with and/or perform ocular diagnostic testing, to include as a minimum Schirmer Tear Tests, pupillary light reflexes, intraocular pressure measurements, extra and intraocular photography and electroretinography and organization of photos. Results of various examinations performed will be recorded in the patients’ medical record and reported to the clinician. Assure daily data entry and billing are kept up to date within the hospital management system, following the established KSU-VHC format. Assist with training of professional veterinary and graduate students in the use of these techniques and associated equipment. Work is reviewed daily, on a case by case basis, by senior clinical faculty or regular technical supervisor. Work is also periodically reviewed by supervisor for results achieved.
  • Provide technical support to the teaching activities of the Ophthalmology Service as it relates to professional, graduate and continuing educational activities. Provide technical support as well as assistance in planning, implementation and coordination of research projects as time permits and when services are not needed for clinical activities. Work is reviewed daily, on a case by case basis, by technical supervisor and senior clinical faculty. Work is also periodically reviewed by supervisor for results achieved.
  • Perform other duties as requested by technical supervisor, Hospital Director or Department Head by following procedures developed for the KSU-VHC. Become familiar with other technician responsibilities in various work areas (cross-train) so that assistance can be offered during periods of absence or during emergency situations.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

For a Veterinary Nurse I:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. 

For a Veterinary Nurse II:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and two years of relevant experience.

For a Veterinary Nurse III:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years post-graduate experience in a veterinary hospital setting
  • Clinical teaching experience will be considered a beneficial asset for this position
  • Basic skills and knowledge in ophthalmology, which should be expected of a graduate from Veterinary Technology program
  • Physically able to handle, restrain and provide medical treatments to exotics, small and large domestic animals
  • Ability to work with domestic animals and ordinary veterinary medical hospital equipment
  • Knowledge of standard emergency veterinary medical procedures is preferred
  • Ability to perform word processing and data entry procedures on a personal computer
  • Be willing and able to master new techniques
