About This Role

This position is responsible for overseeing the management and care of up to 999 head of feeder cattle, 200 replacement heifers, 350 cows with their calves, and 200 stocker cattle across both local and remote locations. The incumbent will also lead a research program focused on both cow/calf and feedlot production systems.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in agricultural or animal sciences.
  • Education in biological sciences, agricultural sciences, or animal sciences may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in animal science or related field is preferred.
  • Four years hands-on experience with cattle.
  • Artificial insemination techniques, pregnancy detection, estrus detection, animal health assessment, and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of sanitizing and disinfecting measures used in animal care facilities.
  • Ability to handle research animals or diseased and injured animals.
  • Knowledge of normal health patterns, animal behavior and abnormal manifestations of illness or injury.
  • Ability to observe animal behavior, determine pertinent information and compile or report information following standardized procedures to clinical staff and/or supervisor.
  • Knowledge of sexing and breeding animals, including gestation periods and weaning ages, as well as knowledge of animal nutrition and the quantities and kinds needed for different animals.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees, professional personnel and the public.
  • Ability to train and supervise the work of students or other employees.

Other Requirements:

  • Mobility to maneuver through the pens to check cattle and drive cattle to the various locations in the research areas.
  • Work requires considerable physical exertion in order to transport in excess of 50 lbs (no more than 100 lbs) unassisted on a regular basis.
