About This Role

The position performs required inspections and testing of fire emergency equipment in compliance with state adopted fire codes. The position assists with assurance measures for other applicable State and Federal regulations and titles affecting higher education institutions.

Position provides assistance with cursory inspection of key areas in compliance with regulations for life safety, occupational safety and health, and environmental protection, but the position's primarily role is required in response stipulations of the international fire code and additional fire safety requirements mandated by the State of Kansas.

This position will assist senior personnel with ensuring environmental and industrial safety compliance assurance and laboratory safety by providing information during fire equipment inspections of key areas of concern and/or non-compliance to safety protocol to ensure that K-State is meeting Federal, State, local codes and regulations, and the expectations of accrediting bodies and funding entities as they pertain to environmental and safety matters.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience reading and interpreting fire code.
  • Experience conducting building emergency system testing as described in the position duties.
  • Familiarity with fire and life system systems.
  • Basic experience with building electrical systems.
  • Current 40 HazWoper certification.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Basic computer skills - (i.e., ability to use PC, laptops, tablets, and handheld barcode or other scanners. Able to download data from these systems. Able to use databases for entry and data look up. Able to communicate via email).
  • Demonstrated verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously to complete required testing and inspection.
  • Education or training in electrical/mechanical systems.

Additional licenses / registrations / certifications:

  • Kansas certification as a Fire Inspector I upon hire or within 6 months of employment.
  • Valid Kansas drivers license upon employment.

  • 24-40 hours training in hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) certification within first 12 months of hire.
  • Must have/maintain 40 hour HazWoper certification upon hire or within first year of employment.
  • Requires enrollment in the hazmat medical surveillance program and respiratory protection program.
  • Must be medically cleared to use related PPE, including SCBA.
  • Radiation awareness training within six months. Service Training within twelve months of hire date.

Additional Role Information:

  • Respond as needed for the Emergency Response Team. Post offer/pre-employment medical evaluation to assess and verify fitness for assigned duties (ability to climb and carry ladders and physical demands as described herein (i.e., physical demands section).
