About This Role

Applications and nominations are invited for the full-time position of Interim Head, Department of Clinical Sciences. This position requires a doctor in veterinary medicine (or equivalent), and clinical associate professor or higher rank in the Department of Clinical Sciences. Preferred qualifications include experience with research, boarded in a relevant specialty, or other advanced training (masters or PhD). The Interim Head will be the chief administrative officer of the department and is responsible for oversight and direction of teaching, research and outreach. Candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an open, participatory administrative style that promotes a scholarly and collegial environment.

PURPOSE
The Department Head serves as the chief administrative officer for the Department of Clinical Sciences. The Department Head is responsible for all matters related to the research, teaching and service missions of the Department and provides advice and counsel to the Dean on matters pertaining to emissions.

Responsibilities 

Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities

• The interim Department Head of Clinical Sciences will have some clinical and teaching responsibilities. The amount of clinical and teaching time would be negotiated with the Dean.

Faculty Development

• Faculty recruitment: Initiate search process, coordinate interviews, negotiate terms, and prepare letter of offer.
• New faculty: Office/laboratory assignment, start-up equipment, orientation, identify mentoring committee.
• Annual review: Review tenure track faculty annual evaluation documents. Provide written review and meet with each faculty member individually.
• Annual review: Review clinical track faculty annual evaluations documents related to teaching and scholarship. Provide written review.
• Annual plans of work: Review and advise faculty regarding annual goals. Establish distribution of effort. Ensure hospital and course coverage.
• Coordinate and conduct faculty promotional reviews: annual reappointment, mid-tenure, tenure, promotion, professorial performance. Prepare Sections I and II for promotional documents. Provide departmental recommendation.
• Monitor mentoring committees for pre-promotional faculty. Review recommendations with mentored faculty.
• Peer Teaching: Observe and provide written review of clinical and/or classroom teaching for every faculty member. Assign and monitor peer groups and peer evaluations (all faculty participate).
• Committee assignments, award nomination, facilitate press release, encourage media activity, conflict of interest, consultation leave time, and disciplinary action.
• Organize and deliver monthly to bi-monthly faculty meetings.

Budget Oversight

• Communicate with Ross University officials, manage annual contract for students. Communicate with and manage Ross University students. (Primary departmental revenue source.)
• Allocate funding: seed research, technical support, faculty start-up, departmental operations, renovation projects (offices, labs, teaching space), core and elective courses, faculty travel and professional development.
• Signature authority for departmental expenses.

Outcome Assessment, Clinical Training Program

• Annual report to KBOR and AVMA-COE.
• Weekly monitoring of technical skills for senior veterinary students.
• Send emails to students who have not completed ONE 45 skills on core rotations.
• Remediation plans for poor student performance.

Curriculum

• Facilitate curricular change.
• Didactic course management: gradebook, examination posting, examination schedule. Submit grades.
• Solicit TEVALS from students for all CS courses (clinical and didactic). Quarterly review of teaching evaluations. Annual review of course evaluations.
• Clinical course management: scheduling lottery, facilitate/monitor KSIS enrollment, grades, class rosters, absences, low grade reports. Meet with poor performing students. Provide quality teaching space for clinical rotations (renovation and provide instructional technology). Scheduling of teaching space.
• ICU/Emergency scheduling for all rotations that require after-hours responsibilities.
• Graduate student management: Logistic coordination of graduate application, tuition support, and reporting for the graduate school.
• Liaison to Disability Support Services for CVM years 3 and 4. Manage recommendations for students with accommodations.
• Oversight for Shelter Medicine Program as needed. Manage MOU’s with regional shelters. Grants and development for student scholarships and programmatic support. Oversight for technician and intern.
• Approve, monitor, and manage for-credit off-site externship experiences. Schedule and manage annually-recurring externship experiences: MWV, UCD-Tulare (dairy), University of Minnesota (dairy), University of Nebraska (equine dentistry), University of Illinois (SA dentistry), State Fair (daily students and ambassadors), American Royal (scholars and educational programs), and Dodge City Rodeo.
• Oversight for research technician.
• Oversight for clinical trials coordinator.

Student Career Development

• Oversight for CVM communication training.
• Oversight for CVM Counseling Services (2 FTE).
• Review of student curriculum vitas, cover letters, and letters of intent (approximately 125 documents/year).
• Career planning lectures and seminars, resource for students applying to VIRMP.

Non-Directed Service

• Participation in university and college committees.
• Manuscript review, AAVC committees, AAVMC Task Force.
• Public education and outreach.
• External referee for other institutions.

Special Projects as assigned by the Dean of the College.

Serve on the Dean’s Leadership and Administrative Council which meets regularly to advise the Dean in projects and planning for the College.

This position is On-site.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

• Doctor of veterinary medicine or equivalent degree
• Associate or full professor in department of clinical sciences

The degree requirement is necessary for accreditation purposes and to ensure candidates possess the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities that can only be attained through a formal educational program at this level.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Board specialty or other advanced training (e.g. MS/PhD)
• Experience with research
