About This Role

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Social Work Student Intern to join our dedicated team to help facilitate exemplary patient care and quality customer service. The student intern will work under the direction of the VHC Veterinary Social Worker and aims to enhance the overall wellbeing of clients, owners, and veterinary staff. This role involves connecting clients and owners to essential resources, supporting the mental and emotional health of veterinary staff, co-facilitating the Paws of Comfort grief group, and collaborating with various departments, including community outreach and shelter medicine. The intern will also contribute to professional development by creating and delivering psychoeducational presentations, promoting a holistic approach to care within the veterinary environment. This is a part-time, temporary position with a commitment of 16 hours per week.

The VHC strives to provide exceptional care for patients from high-quality routine healthcare to state-of-the-art advanced therapy for seriously ill patients. The Veterinary Health Center is located in Manhattan, Kansas which is a vibrant college community with a population of over 55,000 in the Flint Hills.

Worksite Option

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • Basic knowledge of PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.
  • Competency in delivering psychoeducational presentations and materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients, staff, and professionals.
  • Familiarity with the NASW Code of Ethics and its application in professional practice.
  • Basic knowledge of the person-in-environment framework and the strengths perspective when working with clients.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
