About This Role

The Kansas State University Department of Modern Languages seeks a dynamic individual for a full-time (non-tenure-track) one-year position as Instructor or Teaching Assistant Professor of Japanese. This is a nine-month position for AY 2025-2026. The successful candidate will teach up to seven courses throughout the academic year, across all levels of the undergraduate minor in Japanese. We seek candidates with experience or promise in teaching Japanese language and culture courses from the beginning to the high intermediate levels. Experience or qualifications to teach a graduate course in the teaching of English as a foreign language are a plus. Service responsibilities may include running a Japanese conversation table, planning Japanese cultural events, and contributing to departmental initiatives and committees.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Native, near-native, or advanced proficiency in Japanese
  • Master’s degree in Japanese, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Language Pedagogy, or a related field
  • Interest in teaching Japanese language and culture across the curriculum of the undergraduate minor in Japanese
  • Willingness to engage in departmental service, with a focus on providing co-curricular programming for the Japanese minor
  • Candidates whose highest degree is a Master’s degree are eligible to be hired at the rank of Instructor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree or ABD in Japanese, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Language Pedagogy, or a related field
  • Experience teaching Japanese language and culture in a post-secondary setting
  • Experience and interest in teaching a course for the MA program in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
  • Candidates whose highest degree is a doctorate (or ABD) are eligible to be hired at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship
