About This Role:

The project involves a “Leadership” intern working with middle school and high school youth to teach, guide and mentor them in building skills they need to be successful in their futures. Working with 4-H Youth Development staff the intern will develop and conduct a leadership training for area students. Upon completion of the training session, youth will self-select teams to develop, carry out and evaluate a service focused project with the guidance of the intern. These teens will be asked to present their project at the Northwest Youth Leadership Forum held at the end of the summer. The intern will work with the NW 4-H Youth Council to collaborate in planning and carrying out the forum.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.

Location:

Phillips, Rooks, Ellis, Russell, Ellsworth, Barton, Ness, Lane and Rush Counties.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with 4-H Youth Development Extension staff.
  • Develop and conduct a leadership training for middle school and high school aged youth.
  • Mentor youth teams to develop, conduct and evaluate a service project in their community.
  • Collaborate with the NW 4-H Youth Council to develop, conduct and evaluate the NW Youth Leadership Forum.
  • Meet with community organizations and local officials to learn about  community needs to guide youth in selecting service projects.
  • Make oral and written reports to the District Extension Boards.
  • Community service or volunteering with a community organization is highly encouraged. This would be outside of the designated scope of work and working hours.
  • Participate in any professional staff development that may be available.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.

                                                       

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in leadership studies, education or youth development are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media..
  • A strong desire to inspire, empower and educate.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred. 
  • Familiar with multiple web conferencing formats preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position may require attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided through the District Extension Councils.
