About This Role:

The intern will develop a downtown master plan for the city of Goodland. The plan should be a holistic view of Goodland’s Main Street and downtown corridor, from zoning to streetscaping to business needs. The intern will spend significant time with data collections and gathering public input. Working with a landscape architect, downtown renderings will be created. If time allows, all phases of the master plan will be compiled. The intern will be credited for all work done as proof of his/her work accomplished.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.

Location:

Goodland, KS

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Conduct an asset inventory of downtown conditions which will include demographics, existing plans and studies, zoning and land use ordinances, identify city owned parcels, transportation and infrastructure.
  • Develop a community survey to solicit public input.
  • Schedule and host workshops with elected officials as well as public forums to gather resident input.
  • Gather public input on downtown streetscaping and greenspaces.
  • Work with a landscape architect to develop renderings of the downtown master plan.
  • Compile data and public input into meaningful charts, graphs and data sets for use in the master plan.
  • If time allows, compile the master plan document.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.

                                                       

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in regional and community planning, public administration, and economic development are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred.  
  • Ability to create design renderings is preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position will require attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment. A personal computer with design software is a plus.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

The city of Goodland will partner with the Northwest Technical College to provide summer housing.
