About This Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Additive Manufacturing for Energy Transport Applications Laboratory (AMETAL) group managed by Dr. Scott M. Thompson. The AMETAL group focuses on metals additive manufacturing (AM) thermal modeling, AM process monitoring and control, nuclear irradiation effects on AM materials, the design of heat exchangers for AM, and more. The current project related to this position is sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and also involves collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Dong Lin is a co-investigator on the project and will aid in co-advising the Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The goal of this project is to use sophisticated X-ray imaging and other monitoring devices to better understand how laser processing parameters (e.g. intensity profile, power, scan strategy) affect keyhole generation and subsequently pore formation. The selected candidate should have strong technical and writing skills and may need to travel to conduct experiments.
