About This Role

The OVPR IT Director develops and directs the implementation of strategic information and research technology plans for the Office of the Vice President for Research. The incumbent manages and mentors IT personnel resources (including full-time IT staff or technicians and part-time hourly or GA resources) and provides leadership for all the OVPR technical systems, data systems and departmental applications. This position is responsible for ensuring technical operations and security posture are aligned and comply with IT policies, procedures and standards set forth by the state, university. The incumbent is responsible for providing IT leadership and oversight within the OVPR and associated units and supports major strategic plans through a future-forward approach to technology resources. This position manages IT services through subordinate managers.

This position serves on the OVPR leadership team.

The OVPR IT Director will report directly to the AVP for Academic IT and Research Support within central university IT, with a dotted reporting line to the Vice President of Research.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering discipline with substantial information technology leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in architecting and overseeing support for a complex technology ecosystem, including specialized scientific hardware, software, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with HPC systems and their utilization for research.
  • Proven experience with research computing and large-scale data storage systems common in research environments.
  • Experience leading and mentoring a technical team responsible for supporting the unique IT needs of researchers, faculty, and laboratory staff.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing emerging technologies and computational methods in scientific research.
  • Experience navigating the IT and data management landscape of a higher education environment, including familiarity with grant proposal processes and data compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to enable advanced research analytics by providing access to and support for a robust ecosystem of data analysis and visualization tools.
  • Experience consulting with research administration teams to support data analytics needs from quality control to complex modeling and interpretation.
  • Strong record of strategic planning, including developing business cases for technology investments and managing operational and capital budgets.
  • A history of fostering a collaborative environment that bridges the gap between technical staff and scientific researchers.
