About This Role

The Department of Entomology at Kansas State University seeks a Research Associate. The employee will work closely with the principal investigators to develop novel strategies for controlling stored product insect pests. This position supports a collaborative research project between KSU and USDA-ARS under funded agreements.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Independently performs key components of a collaborative research project focused on stored product insect pests under the direction of principal investigators.
  • Designs, tests, and evaluates laboratory and semi-field experiments aligned with project goals.
  • Develops and refines insecticide bioassay protocols; adjusts methodologies based on scientific results and experimental challenges.
  • Maintains and manages insect colonies essential to ongoing research, ensuring consistency and quality of specimens.
  • Collects and documents research data with precision, maintaining thorough and organized lab records in compliance with research standards.
  • Coordinates closely with lab personnel to ensure project resources (equipment, reagents, and materials) are prepared and available.
  • Applies independent judgment in troubleshooting procedures and refining techniques to meet research objectives.
  • Analyzes research data using statistical and analytical tools to draw scientifically sound conclusions.
  • Interprets results within the broader context of project goals and existing literature.
  • Prepares reports, data summaries, and technical documentation in accordance with USDA-ARS funding requirements.
  • Oversees lab safety protocols and ensures compliance with all applicable chemical, biohazard, and waste handling regulations.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a master's degree and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in Entomology
  • Two years of research experience working with stored product insects
  • Strong knowledge of stored product insects; familiarity with insecticide application protocols, insect toxicology, and methods in insecticide bioassays
  • Experience conducting insecticide bioassays
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and chemical handling

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship
