About This Role

Provide direction and lead the Research and Laboratory Safety Program and Chemical Hygiene Program across all KSU location. This position shall have experience in all laboratory safety disciplines, knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures. Must have the ability to serve in a consultative role for Department Chairs, PIs, GTAs, researchers, staff, and students. The incumbent will work to establish a comprehensive research and laboratory safety program that serves university research and compliance efforts and coordinates services across departments (EHS, Facilities, University Compliance Office, etc.). The Research and Laboratory Safety Officer serves as point of contact for laboratory and research safety concerns and is responsible for resolving and escalating any issues, as necessary.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Public Health, or related science or engineering discipline (e.g. toxicology, environmental health, etc.)
  • Masters in related discipline or science
  • Research background
  • PhD. in related discipline
  • Related professional certifications
  • Certification in EHS discipline
  • Three to five years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety, including research and laboratory safety
  • Experience in laboratory safety and/or laboratory safety audits/inspections.
  • Experience, training or education in operation of monitoring, testing, sampling, laboratory and/or analytical instrumentation.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate a variety of technical data, test results, reports and plans.
  • Demonstrates quantitative and analytical capability.
  • Strong computer skills, attention to detail, and record keeping skills.
  • Coursework in chemistry, toxicology, or engineering principles.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for broad audience.
  • Experience or aptitude to learn hazardous materials response safety.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse population.
  • Knowledge of physical and toxicological effects of occupational hazards.
  • Knowledge of occupational health standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used in collecting samples and assessing hazardous environments and applicable regulations.
  • Experience supporting or managing laboratory and research safety programs.

Additional licenses / registrations / certifications:

  • Pre-employment physical and clearance to participate in hazmat team
  • Valid driver’s license upon employment

Additional Role Information:

  • Ability to transport up to 55 gallon drums and/or >75 lbs.
  • Ability to be medically cleared/approved to wear respiratory protection, including SCBA.
