About This Role

The Senior Assistant General Counsel serves within the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and provides legal support across a broad spectrum of university operations. This position focuses on contract drafting and negotiation, regulatory compliance, civil rights matters, and legal research. The attorney works closely with university administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure legal compliance and mitigate risk. The role requires strong legal judgment, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to supporting the mission of higher education.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a juris doctor degree from an ABA-accredited school
  • Two years of relevant legal experience.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Kansas or admitted to membership within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of licensed legal practice.
  • Strong interest in higher education legal practice.
  • Experience in contracting and transactional work.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, presentation, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience maintaining client relationships.
  • Ability to work in-office at K-State’s Manhattan campus.
  • Prior experience advising institutions of higher education, government agencies, or serving as a judicial clerk.
  • Familiarity with Kansas Open Records Act (KORA), Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA), Title IX, and other civil rights laws.
  • Experience managing government agency complaints and investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

Additional licenses / registrations / certifications:

  • Bar Admission: Admission in good standing to the Kansas Bar or membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction with ability to become licensed in Kansas within twelve months of hire.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship
