About This Role

The shelter medicine nurse is responsible for surgical preparation, anesthetic induction/monitoring, intra-operative assistance, and immediate postoperative care for shelter animals on location at regional facilities. This position is also responsible for coordination of activities with regional shelters, medical records, and oversight for stock and cleaning of the mobile surgery unit. As a credentialed veterinary technician working under the supervision of a faculty clinician this individual will have instructional responsibilities and, in this capacity, will independently perform technical procedures, will serve as an instructor for students with judgement made for clinical patients in an anesthetic, surgical and patient care setting.

The mobile surgical unit is a program that provides spay/neuter services and basic care for shelter animals maintained at facilities without a veterinarian or surgical facilities. The shelter medicine rotation is an elective course. Approximately 90 senior veterinary students will participate each year and approximately 4500 animals will be surgically altered annually.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a two-year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic veterinary medical concepts, animal behavior and animal husbandry.
  • Advanced knowledge of nursing care, service flow, and section requirements.
  • Ability to handle, restrain, and provide medical treatments to domestic animals.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to work with and provide preventative maintenance for ordinary veterinary medical hospital equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to appropriate safety procedures.
  • Ability to work in high intensity environment.
  • Skilled in time management and prioritizing daily tasks.
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication, written and oral.
  • Skilled in basic computer skills.
  • Ability to train other employees.
  • Be willing to master new techniques.

Other Requirements:

  • The College of Veterinary Medicine requires that new hires must obtain a Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician within 6 months of employment. Advancing staff must have obtained their Kansas license as a Veterinary Technician prior to advancement.

    Position frequently involves light work.  It is occasionally necessary to perform medium to heavy work associated with transporting or moving animals and/or equipment. Must be physically able to handle, restrain, and provide medical treatment to small animals.  Must be able to monitor heart sounds (hearing) through a stethoscope, monitor patient vital signs on a TV screen and/or medical monitor (sight), insert catheters, manage syringes and needles (digital dexterity) as prescribed, and express instructions quickly (talking) in emergency situations.
