About This Role:

The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University invites applications for a full-time Research Associate. The Research Associate position will support two Centers of Excellences; Center on Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CEZID) and the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases (CEEZAD) for independent research involving viruses such as animal influenza viruses, Foot and Mount Disease Virus, African swine fever virus, Classical Swine Fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Vesicular Stomatis Virus, SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens. This includes the development of DIVA compatible vaccines for ASF, a universal vaccine for influenza, preclinical animal model development, pen-side diagnostic tests, and antiviral therapeutics for various viral pathogens. This position is part of a very busy, successful research team whose main goal is to develop rationally designed vaccines and diagnostics against high-consequence foreign animal, emerging and zoonotic disease threats. The position requires the individual to display critical thinking and independent judgement as it relates to ongoing and new research projects with direct guidance from the Primary Investigator. The research is conducted at the BSL2 and BSL3 level of containment and utilizes several select target animal models such as pigs, sheep, cattle, chickens, hamsters, rat and mice. The position requires the acquisition and maintenance of a DOJ Select Agent clearance.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a master's degree and two years of relevant experience.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidate should have experience in performing research in recombinant DNA technology, bacteria and mammalian cell tissue culture, and working with animals.  Organizational, data analysis, and writing skills are necessary.
  • Animal Molecular laboratory experience - PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, western blotting, affinity purification of recombinant proteins using eukaryotic/prokaryotic cells or cell free systems
  • Conducting safety and immunogenicity studies, immunological assays, virological assays.
  • Ability to present data to PI and others effectively.
  • Hands-on experience conducting Elispot assays in mammals or other immunological assays.
  • Experience in flow cytometic techniques, reverse genetic systems, plaque assays, hemagglutination assay, and monoclonal antibody production in mice.
  • Experienced in manuscript editing, poster presentations and/or presentation at local, university or national meetings, published articles in nationally/globally recognized scientific journals.

Anticipated Hiring Pay Range:

$49,825-$87,169 per year
